Battelle’s Medical Device Solutions business is currently seeking a Software Systems Engineer II. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio.

Battelle’s Medical Device Solutions Business Line is hired by external companies from startups to Fortune 100 to assist them with their product development needs. A significant portion of our work is focused on developing medical devices. This has included projects for mass produced drug delivery devices, immunodiagnostic systems, surgery tools, large scale imaging systems, and more. The Software Systems Engineer II will be an integral part of the multi-disciplinary teams that we form around each project and dedicate to achieving that project’s goal.

This position is for a software systems engineer II who can contribute to small software development teams (2-5 people) typically working on new product development of complex, multi-function medical devices. These devices generally include multiple microprocessors communicating to a Windows or Linux based application. This role is instrumental in the day-to-day operation of our project teams spanning the development life-cycle, focusing on software/firmware requirements development, planning and coordination of our development sprints, software related quality system documentation, and software risk management activities.


  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ yrs. experience, or Master’s degree and 1+yrs. experience.
  • Proven experience contributing to the development of multi-function systems, such as embedded systems and/or commercial products.
  • Experience with structured methodologies and processes such as Agile or Agile-like software estimation and development tools and techniques, perhaps in a role as Business Analyst, Tech Analyst, and/or SCRUM leader.
  • Self-starter, organized, and an excellent communicator, written and verbal.
  • Experience working in software operations tools such as GitHub, Jira, Windchill
  • Demonstrated success in completing projects and tasks within budget and schedule
  • Requires US persons as defined by US export control laws


  • Ideal candidate will have 4+ years of experience.
  • Experience managing multi-level requirements traceability in a requirements management tool, such as DOORS or Jama
  • Experience with validation testing of software tools
  • Systems engineering experience as demonstrated by specifying, designing, and developing software and hardware systems
  • Experience with automated software testing tools
  • Experience in the development of medical devices that are compliant to FDA regulations
  • Understanding and implementation of Earned Value based project/program management
