The Sr. Backend Developer Contractor will design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and APIs, with a strong emphasis on security, performance, and reliability. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable solutions that meet business and technical requirements.

This is a hybrid role based in Columbus, Ohio. Candidates must reside in the Columbus area. In-office attendance will align with the department’s schedule, which is determined collaboratively by the team.
 
This is not a typical CRUD Java developer.
Looking for someone who has:

• 7-10 years Java
• Strong Spring Boot microservices
• API design experience
• OAuth2 / security knowledge
• Event-driven systems experience
• Postman heavy usage

 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Design, develop, and maintain Java/Spring Boot applications including RESTful APIs and microservices
• Implement and manage secure authentication and authorization flows using OAuth2 and Spring Security
• Build and integrate webhook and event-driven architectures
• Manage secrets and credentials securely, including environment separation between sandbox and production
• Develop and maintain Postman collections for API testing, documentation, and automation
• Ensure API resilience through proper error handling, logging, and monitoring
• Collaborate with database teams on data access layer design and optimization
• Write and maintain unit and integration tests; manage builds with Maven and version control with Git
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve code quality, velocity, and maintainability
• Perform other duties as assigned

 
QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot, including Spring Security and Spring Web
• Hands-on expertise with RESTful API design, development, and consumption
• Experience with OAuth2 flows, token management, and secure authentication patterns (including client credentials grant)
• Experience with webhooks and event-driven architecture patterns
• Understanding of secrets and vault management for secure credential storage and retrieval, with environment separation for sandbox and production
• Strong Postman skills: collections, environments, variables, scripting, pre-request tests, and OAuth helpers
• Familiarity with JSON and XML data handling, API error resiliency, and logging/monitoring
• Experience with Git, Maven, and writing unit and integration tests
• Experience working with database access layers
• Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, LLM-based code generation) to enhance code quality and developer velocity
• Ability to apply AI-driven techniques in software design, refactoring, debugging, and documentation
