Emerging data-driven ‘smart city’ technologies have the potential to improve safety, drive economic growth, foster sustainability and provide access to jobs and ladders of opportunity. In order to realize these benefits, cities learn to plan for, leverage, and help channel emerging technology. Columbus is at the epicenter of this movement, having won the US Department of Transportation’s $40 million ‘Smart City Challenge.’
Please join the Moritz College of Law Program on Data and Governance on Thursday, September 13, 2018, as Professor Ryan Calo, University of Washington, delivers a talk on “The Promise and Peril of ‘Smart City’ Technologies.”
Drawing on the work of the UW Tech Policy Lab around open municipal data, augmented and virtual reality, and autonomous aerial and ground transportation, Professor Calo will discuss the promise and perils of new technical affordances for cities and their citizens. This lecture will emphasize the role of the city as a market-maker, a zone of responsible experimentation, and as an incubator for national and global policy and best practice.
The event will take place in the Barrister Club, located at 25 W. 11th Ave., Columbus, Ohio, 43201 (located across 11th Avenue from Drinko Hall, above Panera). Nearby parking is available in the South Campus Gateway garage. Lunch will be served.
