Gender is an innate part of human existence. It is an expression of ourselves and even our culture. Gender, however, is not innate to our creations—that’s on us. And when looking at the Artificial Intelligence technology that exists today, a pattern begins to form. We have a tendency to apply female gender to AI devices that act as assistants, and male to AI with “independent” characteristics—think Siri vs. Watson. We’ve also translated non-gendered languages to have gender, and allowed our conversational AI to adopt gendered biases. How are these gender adaptations affecting our society? Is it for the best? Or are there ways to prevent harmful human gender biases from impacting AI, so that we may have a more equal future?
