At Upstart, our mission is to enable effortless credit based on true risk. In this talk we will discuss how we tackle this mission every day from a data science perspective. We will discuss the goals of underwriting, our use of non-traditional variables, the challenges of making accurate predictions of future behavior, and our efforts to ensure our models are fair and comply with regulatory standards.
About the Speaker
John Lewis earned a PhD in statistics from The Ohio State University in 2014. He then held a research statistician position at Sandia National Laboratories for 5 years where he worked on various applications related to national defense and published papers in several areas including inverse prediction, spatial statistics, and functional data analysis. He joined Upstart in August 2019 where he does work to improve the underwriting process for personal and auto loans.
