This presentation will cover the best practices for managing applications in AWS, over four different domains. The domains covered will be performance, security, reliability, and scalability. Using case studies, published articles, and personal experience, old practices are evaluated to determine which ones still work, which ones need changing and which should go away. Additionally, there are new practices that are only now becoming possible and/or practical which are bringing a new and different style of practice to application management. The whole way that many systems administrators think of servers is changing now that they are little more than ephemeral compute platforms as opposed to physical boxes that can be seen. The change in the nature of servers necessitates a change in thinking about how they and the applications that run on them are managed. From backups to firewalls, to deployments and troubleshooting the world of application management is changing rapidly and the only way to keep up is to continually revise our notions of best practices.
