For Those Getting Their Data In The Cloud…We Salute You!

The Ohio State University is moving their enterprise data environment to the cloud (AWS). This new environment includes an enterprise data lake (S3, EMR, Glue, Specturm, Python, Wherescape), data warehouse (Redshift), and Tableau (on EC2) environment. Hear the strategies that drove the decision, the process for gaining security approval, and the new opportunities to better serve the university community. We will provide an overview of the architecture and specific components. Learn the skills and technologies that have carried over and the new ones gained. Hear the challenges we faced, and the newfound advantages gained through the cloud and modern technologies.

Steve Fischer is Senior Director of BI & Analytics in the Office of the CIO at The Ohio State University. Supported by a great team at Ohio State, he is leading the strategy from a traditional on-prem data warehouse environment to a wider spectrum of data solutions in AWS. This includes a traditional data warehouse and data lake, corresponding data pipelines, and local data repositories. He has 3 degrees from Ohio State. He has a wife and 3 children and enjoys good music with shredding guitars.

Nate Polek is a Cloud Data Architect in the Office of the CIO at the The Ohio State University. He develops cloud based data architecture on Amazon Web Services, and supports data from various systems including Workday and Peoplesoft. Nate received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Ohio State, and has worked in the distribution industry for Rexel USA and in retail for Abercrombie & Fitch. He and his wife Erica have three children and live in the Columbus, Ohio area.
