Introduction to JavaScript

This 4-part course will take place on Tuesday, June 20th, Thursday, June 22nd, Tuesday, June 27th, and Thursday, June 29th.

JavaScript is used to build interactive websites and web apps. If you’ve played online games, viewed image slideshows, or explored interactive visualizations, you’ve seen JavaScript at work!

In this class, we’ll introduce you to JavaScript programming to get you started building your own interactive websites. 

In this class, we will provide you with some of the basics of programming, teach you to use JavaScript to manipulate websites, and start you on the path to becoming a great web developer. Concepts will be reinforced through hands on, in-class exercises. 

Understanding the basics of programming is not required. This is an introductory course and therefore will cover the basics of programming.

This class will be taught by Jan Dennison.

Location

This course is being hosted by Cardinal Solutions. The Cardinal Solutions office is located downtown in the Arena District (401 North Front Street, Suite 210, Columbus, OH). The entrance to the building is in a short alley across from the Big Bang Piano Bar. We will post signs in the area and have staff there to let you into the building and show you where to go.

There is street parking in the area, as well as nearby parking garages. Cardinal Solutions will validate passes for the Front Street Parking Garage, located at 285 N Front St, Columbus, OH 43215.

The free CBUS Circulator also has stops near this location (Northbound/Southbound: Ohio Center Way).

Class Preparation and Prerequisites:

Familiarity with HTML and CSS is assumed for this class – you don’t need to be an expert, but an understanding of tags, attributes and how to they interact with CSS are needed to fully participate. If you do not have an understanding of how to write and build a web page using HTML and CSS, please consider taking our Introduction to HTML & CSS course first.

Students are asked to bring their personal laptops to use if they have one. (Sometimes work laptops have limitations.) If you do not have access to a laptop please contact us before the first class.

Scholarships:

We are able to offer two scholarships for this course. If you would like to attend this class but are unable to due to financial reasons, you can apply for a scholarship here. The deadline for scholarship applications for this class is Monday, June 12. Applicants will be informed by June 14 whether or not they have been granted a scholarship. Scholarship students are guaranteed a seat in the class, even if the Meetup event is full.

Scholarship requirements:

You are a member of the Girl Develop It Columbus Meetup group (www.meetup.com/girldevelopitcbus).

You are able to attend at least 3 of the 4 classes.

Waitlist:

Meetup has removed waitlist functionality for paid events. In the event that this Meetup sells out, there will be no waitlist.

Refund Policy:

Your payment of $80 guarantees your seat in the entire course. Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there’s an overhead to issuing refunds via Meetup.com and we already offer the workshops at such a low cost. We put proceeds into the chapter fund, which we use as our scholarship fund.
