Dr. Velusamy K. Velu, is the Founder of PeruseLab, a cloud-based platform for chemists and chemistry-based enterprises. The platform leverages recent advances in information technology to transform the process of discovering, analyzing, and sharing chemical information. For this presentation, he will discuss the specific technologies, architectural decisions, and ideas used to ensure PeruseLab’s scalability, something that has been factored in at all stages of the software development process. Scalability is critical to PeruseLab’s long-term vision of connecting the global chemistry community while tackling challenges in the field of chemical informatics.

After earning his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Dr. Velu went on to conduct post-doctoral research at The Ohio State University and Arizona State University. While at ASU, his research focused on computer applications in chemistry. It is this work that led to a career in software development. He has developed software applications for a range of industries, including: financial services, insurance, healthcare, retail, and utilities. His expertise is in enterprise Java architecture and information technology strategy.

In my talk I will go into the details of leveraging Java 8’s Lambda functions, Apache’s Ignite caching and in-memory data fabric, its distributed in-memory computing, and Elasticsearch for indexing, storing, searching, and retrieving documents. All these steps are needed to guarantee the scalability of PeruseLab. I will also talk about the platform of our choice.

Pizza and beer will be available at 6:30 – the talk will start promptly at 7. Parking is available around the building on the street and in various paid lots and garages nearby.
